Copyright © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. In this paper, we describe our understanding of what patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) in diabetes research actually means to our local Diabetes Research Group (DRG) for Queen Mary, University of London and Barts Health NHS Trust. We describe the development of our local partnership with patients and the public to improve research and subsequently the health of our population. We explore how successful partnerships in PPIE can be achieved and maintained; and highlight the benefits and value of working with patients and the public to improve diabetes research and thereby clinical care for people living with diabetes. Ongoing challenges in managing PPIE in our DRG are highlighted, as well as the need to continually evaluate and embrace new methods of working. Two event examples, which took place in 2018, are then described to demonstrate our ongoing approach in continuing and developing the local DRG PPIE strategy. Copyright © 2019 John Wiley & Sons.en_US
