Cultures of memory in The Kashmir Files
Abstract
This comment offers a reflection on Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri’s film, The Kashmir Files (TKF), released in early 2022. It links the film to the conception of ‘cultures of memory’ in the work of Indian intellectual D. Venkat Rao, and how memory is stored and retrieved in different cultural contexts, especially the Indian and Western. Viewed in this light, TKF emerges not only as a way of telling the story of repressed memories of the genocide of Kashmiri Hindus which is specific to the Indian culture, but also serves as a therapeutic medium.
