Field-induced single-ion magnetic behaviour in a highly luminescent Er<sup>3+</sup> complex

The magnetic properties of a perfluorinated Er<sup>3+</sup> complex, with record luminescent properties, have been investigated. [Er(F-TPIP)<inf>3</inf>] displays thermally activated slow relaxation of the magnetisation under an applied H<inf>DC</inf> field of 500Oe. The effective relaxation barrier E<inf>eff</inf> is found to be 26.8K (18.6cm<sup>-1</sup>). At zero static field, efficient quantum tunnelling of the magnetization occurs.
