April 14-16, 2014 Brno University of Technology, Technická 3058/10, Brno, Czech Republic Title: Accessories and rivals to QPI? SEM, CSLM and CL of the glass substrate. My presentation deals with issues related to quantitative phase imaging, but not QPI as such. I trace the history of SEM as applied to cancer cells and their progenitors and the early history of confocal microscopy as applied to living cells, both of which areas have a strong association with the former CSSR and the present CZ republic. In one case we do have a rival SEM based method to QPI - though of course the cells cannot be alive! This is based on measuring the cathodoluminescence [CL] of the glass on which the cells are grown, The more the dry mass of the cells, the less electrons penetrate through to the glass and the less the CL signal.
