Explorations of the portions of verse that survive in the context of Middle English prose sermons have suggested for these a number of different functions. In some cases the verse passages probably served as mnemonics for both the preacher delivering a sermon and an audience hearing it, encapsulating in a pithy way a larger argument of some kind. They could offer handy summaries of sources under discussion, whether from the scriptures or elsewhere; and might sometimes have served as reminders of popular songs and snippets (occasionally proverbial) concerning behaviour to be shunned or especially cultivated...
