This chapter traces the historical development of language policy and planning (LPP) as a modern field of study. Following a brief discussion of key concepts and definitions, it outlines the research of the pioneer years, before surveying the critical and ethnographic turns that the field has undergone subsequently. It concludes by discussing the uneasy relationship that current trends have with normative understandings about the form LPP practice should take in a given society, suggesting a rediscovery of the field’s pragmatic and interdisciplinary origins as a means of reconnecting with the more practical concerns of policymakers.
