This contribution is part of the "Dossier: Saba Mahmood in memoriam" segment of Radical Philosophy, Volume 205, Autumn, 2019. It pays tribute to her intellectual contributions which opened space for thinking beyond the limits of the liberal imaginary, and encouraged a radical reframing of intellectual thought. Insights are offered on two aspects of her work: the first is on her analysis of the veiled subject and its challenge to liberal individualism, presented in her path breaking first book, Politics of Piety: The Islamic Revival and the Fem-inist Subject (2005); the second is her analysis of secularism which culminated in her last book, Religious Difference in a Secular Age: A Minority Report (2016). My discussion homes in on how these texts unmasked the exclusionary and retrogressive features of the liberal imaginary, while also taking us beyond it.
